Episode 127 – Two Friends Catching Up And Other Musings

Episode 127 – Two Friends Catching Up And Other Musings With Mike Goodwin.

Episode sponsored by DiverseChurchJobs.com

We all are in the middle of new norms, new realities, and having old conversations in new ways.

Two friends, our Host Christopher J Harris and comedian, Mike “Bowtie Comedy” Goodwin catch up and talk about all of the latest news, while sharing some laughs along the way.

Today’s conversation isn’t ignoring the realities of COVID-19, the race and justice conversations that are before us and the challenges of this season. It is to bring balance to our listening audience as we simply offer other perspectives to what we all are navigating currently. And of course, it doesn’t hurt to find some things in our lives right now to smile and laugh about.

Episode 117 – Praying Through (Jarrett Stevens), Part 1

Episode 117 – Praying Through With Pastor Jarrett Stevens, Part 1

Episode sponsored by DiverseChurchJobs.com

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is on the forefront of most of our minds. This has been an unprecedented season and time.

We have intentionally deliberated about whether to take a break from our normal content or keep pushing through. We have (had / continue to have) some incredible guests and topics lined up for 2020. In some cases, we have paused some topics and in others we feel like its necessary to continue with some of the Guests that we’ve invited to be apart of our conversations. Today is one of those Guests.

Jarrett Stevens is a Pastor, Author, and Speaker. He and his wife Jeanne and their two children live in downtown Chicago where they co-Pastor Soul City Church.

Pastor Jarrett and our host, Christopher J Harris, sat down together to speak specifically about prayer, but more particularly, how we navigate life when it doesn’t look like we’d hoped that it would. Pastor Jarrett’s new book, Praying Through also became a focus of the conversation.

How timely is this during a Global Pandemic? We all are navigating improving our life, including the spiritual aspect of our lives. And we see more people praying more now than ever before.

Episode 108 – What’s Your Name (Anonymous Series) – Part 2

Episode 108 – What’s Your Name (Anonymous Series) – Part 2

Can we still say Happy New Year now that we’re past January? It feels like January was very aggressive! Nonetheless, we survived it and can encourage one another towards an incredible remainder of the year.

At the beginning of this new year and new decade, we want to challenge you to consider who you really are. This message (and series) will be a practically focused series on encouraging people to know that they are not a number, they have a God given name and identity. It is said that “prisoners have a number, but children have a name.”  This series will unpack this idea and layout how that looks in every day life.

This is Part 2 of two part series of the Anonymous Series – What’s Your Name? You can listen to Part 1 here.                          .

This is Part 1 of Part 2 of the Anonymous Series – What’s Your Name?                          .

Episode 105 – A Tribute To Kobe Bryant

Episode 105 – A Tribute To Kobe Bryant (and recognition of the other Deceased)

We will never see Sunday, January 26, 2020 the same.

A day set aside for the NFL Pro Bowl and other sporting events, including basketball, golf, and tennis all took a back seat (rightfully so) to the tragic news of the crash and death of a cultural icon, Kobe Bryant. Unfortunately, eight other individuals also perished in the crash.

The 9 Victims were:
Kobe Bean Bryant(41)
his daughter Gianna Bryant (13)
baseball coach John Altobelli (56
his wife, Keri Altobelli (46)
their basketball-playing daughterAlyssa Altobelli (13)
mother and daughter Sarah Chester (45)
and Payton Chester (13);
Mamba Academy basketball coach Christina Mauser (38)
and pilot Ara Zobayan (50)
This episode is a simple, unscripted tribute to all of these individuals, with emphasis to Kobe Bryant. A man that many of us felt like we grew up with. Not just watching him play basketball, but evolving in our own lives as well. Listen to the episode to hear what we should be thinking about and how we could be responding.

Over the next few weeks and into the new year, The Wise Idea Podcast will be focusing on how to prepare for a new year (and a new decade!) regarding your spiritual life, physical health, mental health, professional/career life, financial awareness, and relational life.

Our host, Christopher J Harris, will welcome guests on the show to discuss various aspects of how to grow and develop in these areas.

This episode features Mr. Chris Mentor, a Professional Fitness Trainer and CEO of Mentor’s Muscles and also serves a post-rehab specialists. In a pretty transparent (and at times, humorous) discussion, they discuss the health journey of our host, as well, as overall diet, health, and fitness approaches that will enable individuals to begin to be INTENTIONAL about their health goals.

Special Message – Happy Thanksgiving

Hello Wise Owls!

We wanted to offer a simple message of Thanksgiving to you!

For all of our friends across the globe, the United States celebrates Thanksgiving. The history and significance of the holiday has many mixed emotions. For many, it is a time for reflection and giving of THANKS that involve traditions of family meals, traveling, and rest.

We here at The Wise Idea Podcast hope you all will get some time over the next few days to enjoy family, good food, and great friends. Most of all, for this group I’m hoping that you all pause and get some much needed rest and recalibration with your normal life rhythms.

As you embrace the meaning of Thanksgiving, what are you THANKFUL for?

Episode 096 – A Pastor’s First 180 Days And More Leadership Lessons with Charles Stone, Part 2

Our host, Christopher J Harris welcomes back Author, Consultant, and Pastor, Charles Stone to the studio to discuss his recently released book, Every Pastor’s First 180 Days: How To Start And Stay Strong In A New Church Job. Of course, we took some time and also discussed his perspective on mindfulness, brain research and a leaders’ emotional health.  In this impactful conversation the 40 years of experience and wisdom from Pastor Stone was clearly evident. You can listen here to Part 1 of our discussion from last week. It was amazing!

More specifically, his new book shares that – 180 days–that’s the critical time every pastor has to establish their role in a new church position to onboard successfully. That first six months can make an enormous difference and give them a powerful foundation to impact the Kingdom of God in a positive way, or it can present them with growing challenges that linger for years to come.

Episode 092 – The “Hug”, Forgiveness, and Racial Reconciliation, Part 2

Episode 092 – The “Hug”, Forgiveness, and Racial Reconciliation, Part 2

Many people watched in AMAZEMENT as a brother, who’s brother had been murdered by a police officer, offered forgiveness to the murderer – in front of cameras from around the world. You can watch it here.

Social media went crazy.  It was trending for days!

Was it appropriate? Did the judge have to hug the convicted murderer? Did she cross the line? Why are blacks always offering forgiveness when injustice keeps happening? When will a significant change take place? Lots and lots of questions swirling.

Last week we welcomed Mrs. Dorena Williamson who wrote a pretty provocative article challenging all of those questions and then some in a pretty forward-thinking and straight-forward writing. You can read the article here.

You can listen to Episode 1 Here.

On another platform Mrs WIlliamson muses, “Yes, God is a forgiving God. But we haven’t really understood the depth of that grace if all our examples of forgiveness are times when the people being forgiven look just like us. Given the long history of white supremacy in this country, we as Christians should ask: Why aren’t there videos of white people forgiving their black assailants trending on our social media? Why aren’t black accusers hugged by judges or comforted by the victim’s family members, as this former police officer was? How long O Lord?””

This episode we carefully walk through what many people missed – the Mother’s response as well. You can Read It And Watch It here.

Episode 090 – Pastor Suicide, Mental Health and Questions Of Faith, Part 2

Episode 090 – Pastor Suicide, Mental Health and Questions Of Faith, Part 2

On September 12, 2019 the mainstream media covered the suicide-death of Pastor Jarrid Wilson from California. The word that was often used was – “Another”. Another Pastor commits suicide. Another faith-leader struggles with mental health. “Another” church wrestles with some heavy theological questions about the mind and faith. In some cases this word “another” was aptly used.  Have widespread access to a 24-hour  new cycle, we have all been privy to the weighty realities of Pastors who have committed suicide recently.

This article speaks to the issue and names additional Pastor’s (and their families, churches and communities) that have been faced with these realities.

Suicide is a growing public health crisis and the second leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 34, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2017, more than 47,000 people died by suicide — a rate of about one every 11 minutes. And Pastors and Ministry Leaders are not immune to these realities.

We welcomed Pastor Adrian Crawford back to the studio for a pretty in depth conversation about mental health, suicide and our personal joys of navigating life and ministry and leadership. Pastor Crawford shares in detail about his own challenges and life story of navigating all of the responsibilities that he has being victorious over the area of mental health and emotional stability. Part 1 of the conversation is here.

Episode 088 – A Discussion on Kanye, Sunday Services, and The Church, Part 2

Episode 088 – A Discussion on Kanye, Sunday Services, and The Church – Part 2

In a break from our normal programming, our host Christopher J Harris welcomes Pastor Justin Ross-Hillard, of New Orleans, Louisiana back to to the podcast.  Pastor Ross-Hillard wrote a brief social media post that has since gone viral.  His post, in response to the trending conversation of Kanye West’s’ recent involvement with several US mega-churches.  You can read his original post here. This Episode is Part 2 of the discussion. You can listen to Part 1 here.

Many people – on all ends of the spectrum – have offered widespread commentary on the “Sunday Service” that Kanye has been hosting.  The Sunday Services has carried its share of mystery, unknown, and (probably) misunderstanding. Without defending the “Sunday Service” or Kanye West, our Host and Pastor Ross-Hillard have a candid discussion responding to a lot of what’s trended over the last few weeks since Kanye has visited two well-known mega churches, one in Chicago and one in Atlanta. There may be more questions raised than answers, but this episode is sure to ignite a conversation…which is the goal!

You can read a few opinions and perspectives about the “Sunday Service” here (in no particular order): Article 1 | Article 2 | Article 3 | Article 4

A quick Google search will surely lend itself to a plethora of articles and commentary on the weekly gatherings.

Episode 084 – An Understanding of Generations, Part 2 (The Back To School Series)

Episode 084 – An Understanding Of Generations! – Part 2 (The Back To School Series)

In Part 4 of our The BACK TO SCHOOL Series, our host Christopher J Harris welcomes back Generational Expert, Meagan (pronounced MEE-GAN) Johnson for a Part 2 of the conversation that we began last week. You can check out Part 1 here.

Meagan is known as a Generational Humorist and has an outspoken, take-no-prisoners Gen X attitude and challenges her audiences to think differently and act decisively when dealing with multiple generations. Meagan graduated from Arizona State University Business School with a BS in Marketing. After working several years in a sales environment Meagan became discouraged to hear all the negative comments about Generation X. (Generation X is the 50 million people born between 1965 and 1980.) As a Gen Xer herself, she felt these comments were of course unfounded. She was further frustrated by the blinders her own managers seemed to have. Meagan began to research everything from small to large corporations in order to find successful ways to work with the younger generation. From that ZAP THE GAP Solving the
Multi-Generational Puzzle was born.

Meagan has written a variety of articles about the multiple generations and has been interviewed
for many publications and audio programs. She has been quoted in The Chicago Tribune,
CNNMoney.com, US News, World Report and many other publications. Meagan and her
Baby Boomer father, Larry Johnson are the authors of Generations, Inc – From Boomers to
Linksters, Managing the Friction Between Generations at Work.

Episode 076 (Life Stories Series) – When God Recycles

Episode 076 (Life Stories Series) – When God Recycles

Mark Twain said, “THERE WAS NEVER YET AN UNINTERESTING LIFE. SUCH A THING IS AN IMPOSSIBILITY. INSIDE THE DULLEST EXTERIOR, THERE IS A DRAMA, A COMEDY, AND A TRAGEDY.”

This is the Life Story Series.

Join Christopher Harris for an encouraging message that he delivered inviting us to see our lives from a different perspective. Often what we consider to be trash (lacking in value or unredeemable), God considers valuable and redemptive. Engage in this message with fresh ears to see what “ah ha” moments may ensue.

==================

Have you ever stopped to consider what your life story is?  This question isn’t about the specific details of what, when, how long. The question is about what’s important, what did it mean, and other questions that unpack the WHY behind the what.

Our goal over the next few episodes is to host guests that will share their unique stories and engage in a level of transparency of their past and present challenges that will allow us to not only learn from them, but appreciate their stories, what they are doing and then simultaneously appreciate our own stories and life narrative. This series has FOUR (4) Goals:

  • We want you to think about your own life story
  • Appreciate your own life story
  • Listen to others’ stories – their victories, challenges, and lessons learned
  • Get a WISE IDEA about how other’s stories could cause positive change in your own life.

This series is sure to prompt smiles, evoke tears, and create “Ah Ha Moments”.

Episode 069 (Life Stories Series) – Depression, Divorce, and Disappointments with Dacari Middlebrooks

Episode 069 (Life Stories Series) – Depression, Divorce, and Disappointments with Dacari Middlebrooks (Author of The Depressed Millennial)

Mark Twain said, “THERE WAS NEVER YET AN UNINTERESTING LIFE. SUCH A THING IS AN IMPOSSIBILITY. INSIDE THE DULLEST EXTERIOR, THERE IS A DRAMA, A COMEDY, AND A TRAGEDY.”

This is the Life Story Series.

Join our Host, Christopher J Harris as he welcomes Mr. Dacari Middlebrooks, author of the recently released book, The Depressed Millennial.

He shares – in a very transparent and honest conversation – what it looks like to live life and you’re just not happy anymore, managing unmet expectations, and what it looks like to recover from divorce, depression and even the questions around identity that many people have. You can connect with him: On Facebook | On Instagram
