A Message About Fatherhood & Life :: How To Recover From Injury With Christopher J Harris

All of the month of June, the Wise Idea Podcast and our host Christopher J Harris will focus on Men, Fathers, Dads, and Fatherhood. To be clear, we are celebrating the men who ARE taking care of business.  Regardless of the cultural narrative that’s been created, there are millions of dads across the world who are handling their business. Regardless of race or class many Dads step up every day to serve their families and empower their children. This month, we’ll contribute to that conversation.

A Few Key Ideas:

  • God’s plan for us is to live HEALTHY, HEALED and WHOLE lives.
  • The context for our story in Recovery From Injury involves King David and his interactions with his sons in 2 Samuel 15: 4-13.
  • 3 Things Missing From This Story – that are almost always missing from homes and families where there is trouble:
    • David doesn’t appear to have admitted his own sins with his sons.
      • You know, the problem for too many parents is the fact that when we sin we feel it is somehow beneath us to acknowledge that we had done anything wrong.
      • DON’T EVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF AN APOLOGY!
      • You cannot – I repeat – YOU CANNOT disobey God and expect your behavior NOT to have an effect on the people you care for… upon those who look up to you.
    • David looked the other way when his children sinned.
      • David NEVER punished Amnon OR Absalom for what they did.
      • BUT DAVID DID NOTHING – He shifted his parental responsibility and He didn’t pass his faith along to his children.
    • David failed to ask God for Guidance and Help.
      • Nowhere in this story do we read of David praying to God for guidance.
      • We don’t see where David asked God to help him forgive his son.
      • Why wouldn’t he do that? Why wouldn’t David cry out to God for guidance and help in the midst of this terrible mess?
      • I suspect it’s because David suffered from the same spiritual weakness that effects many Godly men and women – I call it Compartmentalization: the tendency to put our lives in different compartments.
      • Often, It’s not that we deliberately leave God out of our family life. It’s just that we don’t deliberately include Him.
  • Notice God does not :
    1. withdraw his love
    2. never disciplines in anger(1 Cor 13:5)
    3. never forces our will
  • Notice God does:
    1. Set Boundries
    2. Warns us (Gal 6:7)
    3. Chasens us for our benefit
    4. Is willing to forgive us when we return
  • Allow God To Customize A Plan of Recovery For You.
